Global Majority Artists and Their Plays in Contemporary American Theater
For my capstone research, I studied works of contemporary theater created by artists of the global majority that aim to reach the large audiences of major regional theater companies while still tackling content and experiences that are not typically represented in traditional Western theater. I read a subset of these plays and researched their production histories and playwrights. I then explored how theater companies have approached staging and producing these works in the past.
I interviewed artists who’ve worked on these shows in the past and other industry professionals such as theater company administrators and journalists to learn how they approach their work and how the American theater can continue to improve.
